Glas 2045 - Roadmap for a greenhouse gas neutral glass industry

Project

Within the scope of the project, a roadmap for the German glass industry will be developed, which shows the decarbonization of the glass industry through different transformation paths towards greenhouse gas neutrality in 2045.

Project funding

Federal Association of the German Glass Industry (BV Glas)

Project duration

September 2021 – March 2022

Background

Germany has set itself the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% by 2030 compared with 1990 and becoming greenhouse gas neutral by 2045. In order to achieve this target, the "industry" sector must also make a significant contribution.

The glass industry is one of the most important and energy-intensive manufacturing sectors in Germany. In 2019, it utilized a total of 14 TWh of fossil fuels and 5 TWh of electricity and generated 3.8 million tons of direct CO2 emissions.

The upcoming transformation process of the glass industry towards greenhouse gas neutrality, which has gained further importance due to the recent decisions of the German government on accelerated transformation, will lead to major challenges for the glass industry and for Germany as an industrial location.

Goal

The overall objective of this project is to identify various transformation paths for the German glass industry towards greenhouse neutrality in 2045. These are to be outlined in a roadmap and the detailed impacts on today's energy consumption, CO2 emissions and production costs of the individual glass sectors are to be addressed.
